Find your hair type – the easy way
← All topics: Skin & Hair Knowledge
Every head of hair is different. To find the right care, it's worth taking a closer look – not just at "dry" or "oily", but also at thickness, porosity, scalp and curl pattern. These four simple tests help you find your hair type.
1Hair thickness – fine, normal or thick?
- Fine hair: individual hairs barely noticeable, quickly flat, little volume
- Normal hair: easy to feel, but not wiry
- Thick hair: feels strong, often unruly, lots of volume
Test: Take a single hair between your fingers. Barely noticeable = fine, noticeable = normal, clearly tangible = thick.
2Porosity – how well does your hair absorb moisture?
- Low: water beads off, products absorb poorly
- Medium: care is absorbed well
- High: soaks up everything, often looks dry and frizzy
Test: Drop a clean hair into a glass of water. Stays on top = low, sinks slowly = medium, sinks quickly = high. The test only gives a rough guide.
3Scalp – dry, normal or oily?
- Dry: feels tight, flakes slightly, hair looks dull
- Normal: balanced, doesn't get greasy quickly
- Oily: roots get greasy quickly, hair lies flat
Test: Look at your roots on the second day after washing.
4Curl pattern – from straight to coily
- Type 1 – straight: no natural waves
- Type 2 – wavy: soft to defined waves (2a–2c)
- Type 3 – curly: defined curls to corkscrews (3a–3c)
- Type 4 – coily: very tight, dense curls (4a–4c)
Tip: Determine your curl pattern on freshly washed, air-dried hair – without styling products or heat.
WHY IT MATTERS
The better you know your hair type, the more specifically you can choose your care – from shampoo to hair oil. By the way: your hair type can change over time, e.g. through hormones, seasons or colouring. So it's worth taking a fresh look now and then.
