How to use natural hair care correctly

Anyone switching to natural hair care should know: it works differently than with conventional products. The transition takes some time – but the result is healthier, more balanced hair.

1. Understanding how natural cosmetics work

Natural care products contain no silicones, no harsh surfactants, and no synthetic preservatives.
That means:

  • They cleanse and care more gently , but less superficially .

  • Instant shine or a "soft-touch" feeling from silicones is no longer possible.

  • The hair needs to get used to it first – this often takes 2–6 weeks .

2. Cleaning: Less foam, better effect

Natural shampoos barely lather – yet they clean effectively.

Here's how to do it right:

  • Wet your hair thoroughly.

  • Lather the shampoo between your hands and apply directly to the scalp.

  • Only clean the scalp ; the lengths of the hair will be cleaned during rinsing.

  • Shampoo twice if necessary, especially if there is styling residue or oily roots.

Tip: A mild shampoo with plant-based surfactants protects the scalp and hair structure.

3. Use care in a targeted manner

With natural cosmetics you need less product , but you need to use it consciously.

  • Rinse/Conditioner: Apply only to the lengths of the hair, leave on for 1-3 minutes.

  • Leave-in products: Apply to towel-dried hair, use sparingly – especially on fine hair.

  • Natural oils (e.g. rosemary, argan, jojoba): Versatile and very economical.

4. How to use hair oil correctly

Natural hair oil provides intensive care – but only if you use the correct dosage:

As a leave-in conditioner (after washing):

  • Rub 1-3 drops between your palms

  • Work into the lengths and ends of your hair – not onto the scalp.

  • Ideal for more shine, protection and less frizz

As a scalp treatment (before washing):

  • Apply a small amount of oil directly to the scalp and massage it in.

  • Leave on for at least 30 minutes (ideally overnight), then rinse thoroughly.

  • Helps with dry, itchy or tight scalp

Important:
Less is more. It's better to use small amounts regularly than to use too much at once – otherwise your hair will quickly look greasy.

5. Patience during the transition

In the first few weeks, the hair can:

  • feel dry, dull, or greasy

  • appear less "well-groomed"

This is normal – your hair is regenerating from old residues and adapting to gentler care.

Perseverance pays off. After the transition period:

  • The scalp is often more balanced

  • The hair looks naturally shiny and healthier.

6. Less is more

  • Don't wash every day – 2-3 times a week is often enough .

  • Brush regularly to distribute sebum (e.g. with a natural bristle brush).

  • Avoid heat or use heat protection.

Conclusion

Natural hair care requires some patience – but the reward is healthy, natural hair. No build-up, no silicone film, just genuine care from within.
